"It's a small world after all". What a song, but in fact it's actually a ride at Disneyland that started in 1964 and is still around today. Super amazing the ride features over 300 audio-animatronic children in traditional costumes from cultures around the world, and according to Time Magazine, the song is the most publicly performed song of all time.
Is this another super customer service information sheet? No, I just started humming the tune when I was thinking about the theme for this blog.
What's the small world I am referring to? Well, without me making you hold your breath for too long, let me tell you, it's a small world after all because of the gadget you have in your hand right now or the one that's sitting beside you whilst you're looking at the screen of its bigger brother.
Yes, the small world is your mobile phone
, (the bigger brother by the way is the tablet). How small is it?
In 2019 the number of mobile phone users is forecast to reach 4.68 billion. The number of mobile phone users in the world is expected to pass the five billion mark by 2019. In 2016, an estimated 62.9% of the population worldwide already owned a mobile phone. In fact, if we look at the USA, 95% of the total population own a cellphone and a whopping 77% have a smartphone.
So that's 77% of 327 million people are connected to the internet and surfing every day, 11 hours a day on average to be exact, glued to 5.6 inches of screen (according to the latest stats).
The point is, let's sing together, "It's a small world after all" then you can sing another song, with our websites why are we treating them like, "It's a big big world"
Ahhhhhhhh the penny drops.
With Google saying it's all mobile first and with the overwhelming stats showing it is mobile first
, we are still having daily conversations about 26-inch screens and megapixels, worse are the Mac brigade who have giant TVs times two sitting on the desk viewing the latest web creation.
So maybe, just maybe, when it comes to designing your latest and greatest customer attraction program first web impression
, maybe we should start moving to a mobile look and feel as the major priority. Keep the desktop till last and start singing in unison The Camel's favorite Disney song, "Let It Go". "Let it go, let it go, can't hold it back anymore, the mobile only matters anyway!"
