Have you ever been on a crowded street with lots of people and noise? You feel like everything is a mess and you just want it to stop. Well then, why don’t you sit in a coffee shop corner, sip a black "Barako" coffee, and think about everything in your life.
As I grow older, I realize that one of the most important things we should all learn is when to stop. Many facets of our lives need us to know when it’s time to put a brake on some things. What exactly do I mean? For example, I learned that I should know when to stop working and take a breather, to stop resting and start acting, to stop talking and begin listening, and more.
Despite the fact that working long hours and getting up early is a common daily routine for all of us, this is a reminder for everyone that this is unsustainable in the long-term. Take time to relax and refresh. If people continue to overwhelm their physical and mental energies without rest periods to allow themselves enough time to recover, they will eventually feel burnt out and experience more negative effects than positive. We must learn when to stop working and take a rest.
On the other hand, it can also be said this way: You must know when to stop resting and begin working. Yes, you do have your coffee break, but that coffee break is just 15 minutes, not 30 minutes. Yes, you do need your lunch break, but it is 45 minutes - 1 hour rather than 90 minutes. Yes, you can talk to coworkers about random things, but not too long that it will take your entire shift. You must know when you have had enough rest, enough time for recovery and growth. And when it is time to return to work, you should then tell yourself and the others, "Alright! Let’s get back to work!"
Right now, there are way too many people who talk more than they listen. Let me ask you this: Do you remember the last time you lost your cool while arguing with a partner or with a colleague and said something that stirred the pot? Sometimes you just need to learn when to listen to others instead of just you doing all the talking. We've all been in the position before when we said the wrong thing at the wrong time. Who knows, maybe the other has the solution you have been looking for, if you just had time to listen to them instead of just yapping away.
