I was thinking I can start this blog off with the opening of the song by the great band, Queen. So sorry we can’t embed music, so here we go, “dum de de dum dum”, you get the mood?
Ah, but the lyrics are really good.
It's the terror of knowing what this world is about.
Watching some good friends screaming, "let me out".
Tomorrow takes me higher, higher, high!
Pressure on people, people on streets.
I tell you fellow stormtroopers, unless your last name is Bezos, Zuckerberg or Ma, this year 100% I guarantee there are times that you or some good friends have at some stage screamed, “Let me out” then chanted, dum de de dum dum, pressure.
It's a tough time for all of us business warriors, Covid time, and this past two weeks we had the added joy of two typhoons (Hurricanes for my USA Mates, Cyclones for my Aussie Mob) so the thought of screaming “Let me out!” has crossed my mind more than once.
So this month's bunch of motivational literary joy will be focused on another line of that great song, “Tomorrow takes me higher, higher, high!” Yes folks, the greatest piece of advice I can give to lift you from the doldrums? Tomorrow is another day, yes it may be poo as well, but, you have to at least have an open mind and give it a shot!
I can hear you all from the rafters right now saying, “That’s not enough, give us more than a one-liner”. So OK, let me share with you other things that are in my lift myself up from the economic gutter, throw away the razor blade and long length of rope doom and gloom alternatives.
To be truthful, I do live by, “Tomorrow is another day” and I do believe it gives us the chance to start over again. Yes, it was bucketing down with rain, with the typhoons, the wind was tearing off the roofs of houses, power gone, internet gone, but sooner or later that wind has to run out of puff and we will get the chance to clean up the mess and give it another crack at rebuilding.
This Covid thing can't last forever. I know after five months of it I was totally screaming, “Let me out” but then I just thought, hello, I grabbed the mask and face shield and started to plan on being bigger and better.
So, today? No more screaming “Let me out” no more humming the mantra of dum de de dum dum. Today, you will be thinking, planning and making “tomorrow” your focus.
Start with little things, grab a trusty old writing pad, start listing down some small things, the goals you want to get done, get moving on, that way we can get moving to shrug off the doldrums and get back into the “winning” feeling again. It's the winning feeling that pressure works on beating up, so we want to bring the winning back baby, back and knock that pressure where it belongs, behind us.
And start singing a new song, get your best Marvin Gaye dancing shoes on and start humming this one. “Don’t you know that there ain’t no mountain high enough. Ain’t no valley low enough, ain’t no river wide enough. To keep me from getting to you, baby”. Whatever your baby may be, it’s your goal. There may be obstacles on the way, but you can overcome them to reach that goal.
You got this!
